Planmeca · Dental Equipment · $40,000 – $85,000
A unit with <3,000 tube hours and full service history runs $70k–$85k; drop to $40k–$55k if you hit one with >6,000 hours or a service gap longer than 18 months. Tube replacement alone runs $8,500–$12,000 when it dies, so tube hours matter.
Power on the machine and watch the gantry rotate full circle without stuttering or noise - binding gears kill resale value fast. Pull the last three service reports and confirm calibration was done within 12 months, not promised 'next month.' Shoot a phantom scan and compare the DICOM output to the vendor spec sheet; if contrast or noise looks soft, the tube is tired.
California DSOs with 15+ operatories are absorbing used ProMax units as fast as they hit inventory because Heartland Dental and Sage Dental leased theirs out and are upgrading. Southern California especially - Irvine to San Diego - where implant-heavy practices need fast throughput.

The Plus added motorized positioning and a faster acquisition time - 5.8 seconds vs. 9 seconds on the Classic. If you're doing 12+ implant cases a week, the speed difference means one extra patient per day. Classics are cheaper used ($28k–$45k) but you lose that efficiency and your techs hand-crank the arm.
It needs recalibration before clinical use - most states require it and your malpractice carrier will ask. I charge $1,200 to run full geometric and dose calibration on-site; Planmeca dealers charge $2,100–$2,800. Don't skip it.
Comfortably handles 8–12 chairs if techs manage the queue. More than that and you're looking at backlogs or dropping it into two separate locations. Heartland Dental runs some markets with one Plus per 10 chairs and just accepts the wait.

I save clinics 4–6 weeks of downtime by pre-staging units in my warehouse with full calibration and sensor testing before delivery; you don't wait 8 weeks for a vendor tech. Typically nets a clinic $2,400–$3,800 in recaptured production per week they stay open.
