J. Morita · Dental Equipment · $32,000 – $65,000
Units under $40K usually have 3,500+ tube hours or a service gap of 18+ months; anything between $40K–$55K typically has under 2,000 hours and recent calibration records. Tube replacement runs $8,500–$12,000, so that's the hidden cost nobody wants to swallow.
Pull the service log from the seller - if there's no PM record in the last 24 months, walk. Check the tube hours on the display console; anything over 5,000 hours means you're looking at a replacement within 2–3 years. Boot it up and run a phantom scan; if the image noise is grainy or the reconstruction is slow, the sensor is degrading.
California DSOs are still moving volume on these because they need multi-location equipment at under $50K per unit; Texas and Florida see steady demand from smaller ortho and implant practices that can't justify a $120K Planmeca but won't touch a Chinese CBCT. Southern California in particular has tight used inventory because Heartland Dental and Western Dental keep machines longer before pushing them to secondary markets.

You lose $6K–$12K per month in referral fees and patient retention. Aspen Dental clinics that own their CBCT see 35–40% higher attach rates on implant cases because patients see the 3D images same-day.
Scanning takes about 30 minutes of hands-on training; reconstruction software is basic enough that any hygienist picks it up. Interpretation is different - if you're not trained in implant planning, you still need a radiologist or surgeon reviewing before placement.
J. Morita released the 5G version in 2020 and the 3De hasn't been manufactured new since about 2018, but used market is thick because thousands are still in clinics. Parts availability is solid for another 4–5 years minimum.
