Sciton · Aesthetic Lasers · $60,000 – $110,000
A JOULE at $85K with all three modules and under 2,500 handpiece hours on the BBL is mid-market; jump to $110K if HALO hours are below 1,200 and service records are clean. Units that sat 18+ months between service calls or have missing maintenance logs drop to $60K–$70K because you're budgeting another $8K–$12K in repairs upfront.
Plug it in and fire up calibration mode - watch the aiming beam, spot size consistency, and whether the handpiece connector seats flush without play. Pull the service log from the distributor (call Sciton directly if the seller won't provide it) and verify HALO fractional mirror isn't clouded - hold it at an angle under LED light and you'll see dust or coating degradation immediately. Check all three platforms one run-through each; a JOULE that only runs BBL reliably is a $45K negotiation point, not $85K.
California and Texas med-spas still lead JOULE adoption because of the three-platform density - SkinSpirit in LA and Sona MedSpa chains need turnover speed, and JOULE's module swap hits their 6–8 patient-per-day model. Secondary market is exploding in Austin and Phoenix as practices scale out of injectable-only models.

Sciton owns the firmware and calibration backend, so yes - you can use third-party techs for handpiece swaps and power supply work, but any module software issue gets you back to Sciton or a licensed distributor. That's $180–$250/hour labor plus travel. Not ideal but workable if you're 90 minutes from a tech hub.
GentleMax Pro is one-trick: IPL for pigment/vessels, Nd:YAG for hair and deep vasculature. JOULE does that plus fractional resurfacing (HALO), which means you own collagen remodeling without referrals. JOULE patients get 3–4 revenue streams per visit; GentleMax patients get 1. GentleMax trades at $35K–$55K used, but you're trading $3,000–$5,000 per month in lost procedures.
BBL runs 4,000–5,000 hours before the flashlamp and internal optics degrade noticeably. HALO fractional micro-optics are rated 2,000–2,500 hours - that's the weak link. Replacement handpiece is $1,800–$2,400 per unit, but if you're hitting 200–250 treatments per month, you're looking at $400–$600 handpiece cost per month built into your unit economics. Budget for it now.

I save clinic owners 3–4 weeks of downtime by vetting handpiece condition and matching the right unit to their software version before delivery - wrong firmware version costs $2,500 in tech time. I also broker direct connections to three regional Sciton service techs who charge $180/hour instead of $400/hour dispatch calls from the manufacturer.
