KaVo · Dental Equipment · $5,000 – $12,000
A Grade A unit (under 40K exposures, full service history, new sensor) runs $10,500–$12,000; a Grade B (50–70K exposures, spotty maintenance records) drops to $7,000–$8,500. That $3,500 gap is real - missing tube hours and sensor replacement receipts tank resale value hard.
Pull the maintenance log from the seller's PACS system before you commit - if there's a 18+ month gap with no calibrations, walk. Physically inspect the sensor housing for moisture damage or loose connectors; GX-770s used in humid operatories get corrosion around the power port. Run a test scan on a phantom head if they'll let you - image drift or noise tells you the tube's near end-of-life.
Southern California DSOs are hoarding these because the GX-770 integrates cleanly with Dexis and Planmeca PACS without proprietary hacks. Western Dental's scale-up in Arizona and Nevada last year created supply pressure; expect $1,000–$1,500 premiums if you're buying in those markets right now.

If the seller can't produce calibration reports within the last 12 months, assume the tube's exhausted. A recalibration costs $400–$600; a new tube is $2,800–$3,600. Ask for the exposure counter off the service panel - anything over 80,000 and you're buying a machine that needs $3K+ in parts within a year.
The CS 9300 (Carestream) is faster (5.2 sec vs. 7–8 sec for the GX-770) but costs $2,000–$3,000 more used because it's newer and DSOs prefer the speed for throughput. Orthophos machines are solid but older firmware means integration headaches with modern practice management software - stick with GX-770 if you're running Eaglesoft or Dentrix.
The GX-770 is fixed-mount only. If you need portability, look at the Gendex Vérité or Sirona Orthophos SL pano - both are wheeled units, but you'll pay $3,500–$5,500 more used. Wall mount means reliability; portables trade convenience for maintenance headaches.

I source refurbished units with fresh sensor kits for $7,800–$9,200 and handle all credentialing and HIPAA-safe data wipe - saves your IT team 6–8 hours of paperwork and gets you compliant faster. Most clinics buying direct from practice closures waste $1,200+ on disposal costs and loose hardware; I ship ready-to-bolt-down.
