Cutera · Aesthetic Lasers · $35,000 – $60,000
Units under $45,000 usually have 80M+ handpiece hours or a 12+ month service gap - red flag. Pay $50,000–$60,000 for sub-50M hours, clean maintenance records, and current calibration cert.
Pull the handpiece and look for burn marks or discoloration inside the lens barrel - sign of internal mirror coating failure. Request Cutera's pulse count log (real clinics track this); if seller can't produce it, hours are fabricated. Power it up yourself and run a vascular test pulse on practice skin - if beam looks spotty or inconsistent, capacitor bank is failing.
California clinics (especially LA and San Diego) need vascular lasers constantly because rosacea and spider vein demand never stops - supply is tight. Texas is secondary but growing; Austin and Dallas chains are buying aggressively.

Handpiece. Always. You'll hit 50–60M pulses and the lens coating starts separating. Second is the cooling system compressor if the unit ran hot clinics or never got serviced. Third is the main power supply capacitor bank - usually happens after 5+ years of heavy use.
Buy the contract if your unit is under 50M hours and you plan to keep it 3+ years. Cutera charges $3,200–$4,500 annually for a full contract. Pay-per-visit runs $800–$1,200 per service call. If you do two services yearly (you will), the contract breaks even fast. SkinSpirit and Schweiger Dermatology both run contracts because it's cheaper than surprises.
Do not buy third-party handpieces. They're junk and void remaining warranty. Cooling parts (compressor, hoses, filters) you can source aftermarket and save 15–20%, but anything optical or electrical goes through Cutera or an authorized distributor. A used Cutera handpiece costs $1,400–$1,900 versus $2,200 new.

I save clinics 6–10 weeks of downtime by connecting them to Cutera's certified refurb program instead of buying grey-market units with no parts history. That's $12,000–$18,000 in lost revenue per week at a typical med spa.
