Cutera · Aesthetic Lasers · $12,000 – $22,000
A unit with under 400 handpiece hours and full service logs sits $18K–$22K; same machine with a 1,200+ hour gap since last calibration or missing maintenance records drops to $12K–$15K. IPL handpiece replacement alone costs $1,800–$2,400, so unknown history = big risk.
Run the handpiece test fire at 35 J/cm² and watch for color uniformity across the spot - dark patches mean the flashlamp is dying and you're buying a $2K repair. Check the cooling cartridge for mineral buildup under the lens; white crusty buildup means it's been running tap water instead of distilled and the internal lines are probably corroded. Pull the service log and call the last clinic directly - don't trust a broker's word on whether it was actually maintained.
California clinics are picking these up as trade-ins because newer IPL platforms with RF combos are eating their lunch, so used inventory is fat right now in SoCal and LA. Texas demand is steady because med spas in Austin and Dallas still run high-volume hair removal as their bread-and-butter and ProWave LX does that job for half the capital.

It works on dark skin if you dial the pulse width up to 15+ ms and drop fluence to 25–30 J/cm². The IPL spectrum is dumb - it's not selective enough to skip melanin in the dermis. Sciton JOULE has better selectivity because of the broad 500–1200 nm window, but yes, you can use ProWave on Fitzpatrick IV-V with conservative settings and it won't be a liability.
The flashlamp inside the handpiece is rated for 2.5 to 3 million shots before output drops below 85% of spec. At 500 shots per patient leg and 10 patients a day, that's 18–24 months of hard use. One replacement at $1,800–$2,400 is cheaper than a new Cutera Excel HR used unit, so it's a sunk cost you have to factor in.
It's a trap. Unknown hours means either the last owner didn't log maintenance (red flag for abuse) or the machine was in storage and the capacitors are sketchy. Have it pressure-tested and calibrated before you buy - that runs $300–$400 out of pocket but if it fails, you just dodged $14K of dead weight. Ideal Image and SkinSpirit don't run mystery equipment for a reason.

I can get you a full refurbished unit with new handpiece cartridge, calibration cert, and 12-month parts warranty in 10 days instead of 6 weeks you'd wait on factory refurb. That's 40 days of revenue recovery if you're down a laser - the warranty alone costs me $800 but saves your clinic $5K+ in downtime risk.
