Lumenis · Aesthetic Lasers · $15,000 – $28,000
Units at $15k usually have 70k+ handpiece hours and a service gap (last maintenance >18 months ago) - that's $800–$1,200 in immediate recalibration you'll eat. Jump to $24k–$28k and you're getting <50k handpiece hours, full service history, and often a warranty card from the clinic that retired it.
When you walk in, fire up a test pulse on the display arm and watch the energy readout - if it drifts >8% between shots, the laser tube is degrading. Spin the handpiece under the optics and listen for vacuum noise; if it's thin or wheezy, compressor rebuild is $600–$900. Pull the maintenance log and count the calibration dates - anything longer than 14 months between services means someone skipped the cooling-loop flush.
California medspas are absorbing used Duets like crazy right now - SkinSpirit alone added 6 units in the Bay Area in 18 months because the ROI on hair removal is 3.2x faster than any other aesthetic service. Texas is hot too but there's a 2-3 week shipping delay due to inventory moving from LA warehouses to Houston.

Cutera CoolGlide is 1064nm - totally different molecule, better for dark skin if your techs know how to dial it but slower per session and harder on deeper vessels. Sciton's tech is newer but you're buying at $65k–$85k new. Used Duet at $20k does the same hair removal in most cases, just needs trained techs. No magic.
Two calibrations ($400 each), annual compressor service ($250), handpiece replacement every 2–2.5 years ($2,200–$2,800). Call it $3,100–$3,600 annually if you're running 6 days a week. That's built into your cost per treatment.
If you're just starting hair removal, the $15k machine works. But if you're in a 3+ operator clinic, get the $23k–$26k unit with <50k handpiece hours - your downtime cost will kill the $8k price difference in 14 months. Schweiger Dermatology runs their Duets hard; they swap at 70k hours.

I source handpiece hours and run full diagnostics before listing, which saves you 4-6 weeks of back-and-forth with the seller's tech. That's the difference between buying blind at $19k and inheriting a $4,500 tube replacement versus paying $22k for a machine I've already certified.
