Dentsply Sirona · Dental Equipment · $2,500 – $5,000
A unit with under 1,500 handpiece hours and documented annual service hits $4,200–$5,000. One with 3,000+ hours, no service records, or a handpiece that spits water inconsistently drops to $2,500–$3,200 - that gap is real money.
Fire it up and listen - magnetostrictive handpieces should have a clean high-pitched hum, not grinding or chattering. Hold the handpiece under water and check coolant flow at each power setting; if it's weak at settings 3–6, the peristaltic pump is failing. Inspect the foot pedal for cracks and test the on/off switch three times - sticking here is common on 8+ year old units.
California DSOs (Pacific Dental Services, Western Dental) replace scalers every 4–5 years, flooding used market with Grade B units at $3,500–$4,200. Texas and Florida clinics hold onto equipment longer, making Grade C stuff more common but also cheaper if you're willing to rebuild.

Because it's in every DSO operatory. Supply is huge but so is demand. Piezon runs about 5–10% cheaper ($2,300–$4,700) but magnetostrictive handpieces last longer under hygienist foot - more abuse-tolerant design.
Grade A: under 1,200 hours, original handpiece, annual service records, all three tip inserts included - $4,500–$5,000. Grade B: 1,500–2,200 hours, refurbished handpiece, service gaps under 18 months - $3,500–$4,200. Grade C: 2,500+ hours, handpiece needs replacement, spotty or no service history - $2,500–$3,200.
Dentsply stocks handpiece assemblies - 4–7 days direct order, $575 new. Refurb handpieces run $320–$400 and take 10–14 days. I keep two refurb units on hand so my clinic clients don't wait; that's worth asking any broker upfront.

I can source a Grade B unit with 18-month warranty for $3,800 in 6 days instead of 8 weeks on Facebook marketplace - saves you downtime and handpiece surprises. Most of my DSO clients budget $400 for handpiece refurb anyway; knowing that upfront changes negotiating power.
