Dentsply Sirona · Dental Equipment · $2,500 – $5,000
Used units run $2,500–$5,000 depending on handpiece hours and whether the console's power supply has been serviced in the last 3 years. A machine with <1,200 handpiece hours and recent service invoice goes $4,200–$4,800; anything over 2,000 hours hits $2,500–$3,100.
Pull the handpiece and look for pitting inside the magnetostrictive stack - that's $400–$600 to replace and signals end-of-life. Check the foot pedal's responsiveness; if it sticks or lags, the potentiometer is worn ($150–$200 fix). Ask for the service log specifically; if there's a gap longer than 18 months, get a tech inspection before committing.
California DSOs are snapping these up because Prop 65 water disposal rules have made older Cavitrons cheaper to replace than recertify. Texas markets (Dallas, Houston) are still running 10+ year old Cavitrons, so used inventory moves slower but prices are softer - $2,600–$3,400.

Standard quarter-inch tubing. Cavitron predates all the fancy closed-loop systems, so if your building's tap water is over 300ppm mineral content, you'll want to add a basic inline filter ($45–$80) to prevent nozzle clogging. Most clinics just do it and move on.
Run it at 80% power with the tip in a cup of water. If it vibrates unevenly or sounds like a grinding coffee grinder instead of a clean buzz, the stack's deteriorating. You'll hear the difference in 10 seconds. Also check if tip removal requires pliers - tight tips mean corrosion inside the coupler.
Cavitron uses a proprietary 0.8mm insert coupling. EMS and Acteon tips are physically incompatible. You're buying into the Dentsply ecosystem on tips ($12–$18 per tip, roughly 3–4 replaced per month per chair). That's not a deal-breaker, but factor it into your cost math.

I place these in batches for Heartland Dental clinics and save them 40–50% versus Dentsply's new MSRP of $7,800 per unit. A 4-chair clinic buying used saves roughly $18,000–$22,000 on a full equipment refresh compared to new.
