3Shape · Dental Equipment · $22,000 – $42,000
Units under $28k usually have service gaps or cosmetic wear on the scanning head; anything above $35k better have a recent calibration certificate and under 3,000 optics hours. Replacement color sensor module runs $4,200–$5,100 if you buy out-of-warranty, so ask the seller point-blank about any sensor history.
Physically inspect the scanning tip under magnification - micro-scratches on the sapphire window kill color accuracy fast and cost $2,800 to fix. Power it up in a dark room and verify the laser fires evenly across the field of view; uneven spots mean the optics are drifting. Get proof of the last factory calibration date; anything older than 18 months and you're gambling.
Southern California DSOs are burning through these because patient expectations for digital dentistry force the issue - Sage Dental alone has rolled out Trios 4 to 60+ locations in the last three years. Texas and Florida are following, but California's reimbursement codes for digital scans actually pay out better, so demand is heaviest here.

Color scanning. The Trios 3 requires a separate RGB pass which adds 30–45 seconds per scan and confuses half your staff. Trios 4 does it in one pass. That's it. Don't let anyone tell you the 4 has 'revolutionary optics' - it's the workflow that changed.
Either. Export the STL, send it anywhere. The Cerec will read it fine. 3Shape mills obviously integrate tighter, but you're not locked in. Lots of clinics use Trios with Dentsply or even open-source mills.
5,000–7,000 hours of scanning time before color accuracy starts drifting. A busy DSO office doing 40–50 scans per day hits that in two and a half years. After that you're looking at sensor replacement or trade-in. I've seen units at 8,000 hours still working but the colors are washed out.

I saved a 12-location Heartland Dental affiliate $84,000 last year by routing three used Trios 4s with clean service records instead of forcing them into new Cerec systems - they already had the mill, just needed scanning. Two-week turnaround on refurb plus my calibration beats dealer timelines by a month easy.
