Planmeca · Dental Equipment · $3,500 – $7,000
A Grade A unit (under 25k exposures, full service history, original cable) lands $6,200–$7,000. Drop to Grade B (25k–50k exposures, minor cosmetic wear, service gap under 12 months) and you're at $4,500–$5,800 - that $1,500 gap is real money.
Plug it in and fire three test exposures on the clinic's system - no black corners, no pixelated artifacts. Inspect the cable where it enters the handpiece; if the sheath is cracked or kinked, replacement runs $400–$600. Pull the sensor log from Romexis (or ask the seller to run it) - anything over 50k exposures needs price reduction or warranty coverage in writing.
California and Texas markets run hot; Heartland Dental practices in the Midwest are actively retiring Planmeca Gen 2 units and upgrading, flooding used inventory with Grade B sensors at $4,200–$5,100. Coastal practices (LA, SF, Miami) command 8–12% premiums because refurbishment shops stock them within 48 hours.

Yes, without question. The Intra works on Romexis 5.0 and every version after. Older Romexis 4.x? Still yes, but support ends 2025 so don't bet on it.
DEXIS runs $4,800–$6,500 used and locks you into their software ecosystem (no Romexis option). The Planmeca integrates into any TWAIN-compliant system. DEXIS cable replacements are $450; Planmeca is $400. Functionally equivalent, different ecosystems.
Clean appearance means nothing. Demand the exposure log, the sensor history from Romexis, and a calibration report (we charge $45 for one). A Grade A sensor should show zero dark-field errors in the last 100 exposures. If the seller can't produce logs, assume Grade B pricing.

Buying through a reputable refurbisher (not clinic-direct) gets you a 12-month warranty and sensor calibration check - saves you $300–$600 in troubleshooting calls. Most clinics don't run calibration verification; we do it before shipment.
