Acteon · Dental Equipment · $3,000 – $6,000
A unit with under 2,000 handpiece hours and a clean service record (last calibration within 24 months) lands at $5,200–$6,000. Push that to 4,000+ hours or a 3-year service gap and you're looking at $3,200–$4,000 because piezo efficiency degrades and you're now the house that pays for a $450 recalibration.
Fire it up on the lowest power setting and listen for a smooth high-pitched whine - if it sounds like a grinding motor, the piezo stack is probably cracked. Look at the handpiece tip under magnification for pitting or cracks in the scaling tip itself (replacement tips cost $35–$60 but if the handpiece is damaged, you're looking at $1,400–$1,800 for a new one). Check the foot pedal; it should click cleanly into three zones without sticking - a spongy pedal means the generator's pressure sensor is dying and calibration won't stick.
Southern California and Texas have heavy inventory because DSO consolidation moves equipment constantly; Sage Dental's closures last year dumped dozens of P5s into brokers' hands at $3,400–$4,100. If you're shopping in Irvine or Dallas right now, you've got selection but also price compression from that supply glut.

It's not obsolete, it's just old. Works as well as the day it left the factory if you keep up with maintenance. Problem is a lot of brokers sell you clapped-out units without maintenance records and call them 'refurbished.' That's how you end up with a $4,500 paperweight. Buy one with service history, you get 5+ more years easy.
Grade A: under 1,500 handpiece hours, all original tips, LED bright, last service within 12 months, $5,400–$6,000. Grade B: 2,000–3,500 hours, LED still works but dimmer, service records spotty or 18–24 months old, $4,100–$5,000. Grade C: over 4,000 hours, LED dark or dead, service gap over 2 years or never serviced, $3,000–$3,800. Grade C is Russian roulette - you might get lucky or spend $600 on recalibration and have it still not hold pressure.
Cavitron is magnetostrictive, not piezo - it runs hotter and slower, hygienists hate switching if they're trained on piezo. EMS Woodpecker at 38 kHz is the real competitor to the P5, same price range used, slightly quieter but also slightly less power. If your staff knows Acteon, stay Acteon. If you're indifferent, Woodpecker is fine but not better - it's a horizontal lateral motion versus the P5's vertical amplitude, just preference.

We can source a Grade B unit with a fresh 24-month calibration certification in 5–7 days and have it on your loading dock for under $4,800; trying to source this cold yourself adds 4 weeks of phone calls and a $600–$900 risk if the unit needs generator repair. That's time your operatory sits empty - I'll get you installed in half the time for less money.
