KaVo · Dental Equipment · $1,500 – $3,500
A unit with sub-3,000 handpiece hours and full service records from a group practice (Heartland Dental, Western Dental) lands $2,800–$3,500; anything over 6,000 hours or missing calibration logs drops to $1,500–$2,100 fast.
Pull the handpiece and eyeball the laser window for crazing or discoloration - cloudy optics are a $400+ repair and a deal killer. Run the self-test sequence; if the scale doesn't zero out or the LED flickers, the capacitor board is failing. Ask for the last calibration date and service invoice; if it's been 18+ months since calibration, budget $350 for recalibration before placing it.
California DSOs (LA, Orange County, San Diego) are chewing through these at 12–15% higher velocity than the Midwest because Medi-Cal reimbursement for early caries codes (D0120) finally moved. Texas is softening - supply exceeds demand in Houston and Dallas right now.

Yes, if it's the newer KaVo cordless model (post-2018). Battery life holds 6–8 hours and practices dock it daily anyway. The older corded models work fine but operatories with compact layouts get frustrated with the cable. Wireless moves faster.
Tips are replaceable (~$180 each), but the optics inside degrade after 8,000–12,000 hours of firing. You can't rebuild it. Full handpiece replacement runs $1,200–$1,600. If your unit's over 10,000 hours, budget for a new handpiece in year one.
The pen is lighter, but it's a gadget for hygienists; the desktop DIAGNOdent is the clinical workhorse for detection + documentation. LUM models are phased out and parts are drying up. Stick with the standard DIAGNOdent.

A documented, sub-4,000-hour DIAGNOdent closes in 9–14 days versus 45+ days for a mystery-box unit with no service history. I've placed 23 of these in the last 18 months; clean documentation cuts my phone time in half and your holding cost disappears.
